Research interests

I hold a MSc in Psychology at the University of Amsterdam and a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at the Donders Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and the Institute for Computer Science of the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands. My main approach has been to associate (the lack of) subjective experiences with behavioural and neuroscience measurements. My method of choice for the latter is EEG/MEG for their ability to unveil the rich complexity of neuronal processes, in particular regarding their oscillatory nature. I am broadly interested in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, as well as disseminating neuroscience through artistic research and public performance. Within the art collective OuUnPo I organize and perform multidisciplinary art-science events, and in 1+1=3 I research the potential of real-time EEG/MEG analysis in sound and dance performance.

At NatMEG I am assisting a wide range of cognitive and clinical neuroscience studies, as well as developing and performing daily operations. In addition, I organize and teach MEG-EEG analysis to our national users through e.g. local hands-on workshops and the development of online tutorials and video material. I’m currently following up on my previous study showing that the attentional state is consciously accessible (Neuroimage, 2014), an experiment inspired by meditative practices. This was done by comparing subjective reports of attention with the trial-by-trial distribution of cortical alpha oscillations. I now use combined EEG-MEG recordings and a tactile discrimination performance to further explore the neuronal networks underlying (the benefits of) metacognitive ability.
